Walkers

When choosing a walker for yourself or a family member, we recommend considering the following features:

  • Fit: Most walkers have adjustable height. While standing straight, hold your elbows are at a 20° - 30° angle and measure from the ground to the bend of your wrist to determine your rough height requirement.
  • Supports your weight: For safety reasons, only purchase a walker which is strong enough to support your entire weight.
  • Wheels or no wheels: Walkers that utilize four legs provide the greatest stability. However, walkers that offer wheels on the front legs tend to glide over carpeting and uneven outdoor ground better.
  • Does it fold: If you will be taking your walker on trips in car or via public transportation, we recommend that you consider one that will fold down to a more compact size.
  • On-board storage: Consider a walker that offers the ability to carry some personal items.
  • Price: Purchase a walker in your price range and ask your physician or Medicare representative for reimbursement forms.
